Wallace and Grommit Soundtrack- The planning of making the music

The things that I need to look at in order to get the music I am after:
  • What music would go with each part of the clip
  • What instruments will I need
  • What style of music
  • Do I want music throughout the whole clip or just certain parts?
  • Research
My research
I wanted to do some research as I think this would help me find what I am looking for so I can experiment and look at different styles of music and perhaps find things that I like that I can recreate and make it my own. I think it's important to research and trial and error because you won't get what you're after just by doing it first time and not thinking about it.
So before I start doing anything I have looked at the original sound track.

I wanted to listen to just the soundtrack without watching it at the same time so I could take it away from the clip and try and imagine it. I did really enjoy this soundtrack and I do think it works really well but something I'm after is a little different to this. I feel there's quite a lot going on in the original soundtrack and I'm feeling like I only would like 2 or 3 instruments in my soundtrack.

I then watched the clip with the soundtrack with it.

I think the original soundtrack is really good but I am going to do something completely different. I like the way that the music in the original is fast and energetic and has that 'mischievous' feel to it and this is something that I was also after. The notes and chords that are played are played quite sudden and it's very 'stop and start' which gives it a bouncy, intense and fun feel to it.

What instruments I want to use
  • Piano
  • Trumpet/Cornet

I have chosen these two instruments for the time being because from listening to the original I noticed that they use brass instruments, it sounds like a big orchestra. So by using a Trumpet and/or a Cornet I thought I could get this feel to it also. I also like the fact that with a Trumpet and a cornet you can create notes that hold on for a long time and you can also create some short and sharp notes which I think will contrast together really well.

The reason for choosing the Piano is that there is a lot you can do with a Piano and you can create a lot of different sounds depending on how it is played. The kind of music that I would like to played from the using the Piano is quite jazzy music and also again like the original 'stop and start' because I feel like this adds a lot of tension which relates to the scene perfectly.

I found this video below, ignoring the other instruments going on and just listening to the piano and trumpet works really well. I was a little unsure as to whether it would sound too empty with just the two instruments going on but this really works.

I found another video which is a Trumpet and Piano solo (go to 2 minutes 34 seconds). This music really inspired me because I think this style would work really well. Although I would like it to be much more upbeat and slightly faster but there is some parts in this clip where there are faster more complicated parts which is something I would like.

I also thought that once I have recorded the Piano and Trumpet part I'm going to try it on the track and see whether it needs anything else because I thought a drum could sound quite good in the background, just a basic beat in the background with a Cajon drum. I think this might make the track feel fuller.

The style of music I am after

The style of music I am after is something quite 'jazzy'. I think this would fit nicely with the clip as it is very upbeat and I think it gives the right feel to relate to the clip and what is going on during scenes.

A bit about Jazz music...

Jazz is a style of music which was originated at the beginning of the 20th century. Although some people say it was before this and believe that it was within the African-American communities of the Southern United States.
It takes on European elements and intertwines them with the African-based music. Blue notes, improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swung note all come from the African roots. From the beginning to now, jazz music has brought in different types of feelings and elements from popular music.

Instruments typically used in jazz music...
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Bass guitar
  • Double bass
  • Flute
  • Trumpet
  • Piano
  • Electric guitar
  • Banjo
  • Tuba
  • Vocals
  • Trombone
  • Drum kit
From exploring the instruments typically used in jazz music, already using Piano and Trumpet/Cornet and maybe using drums I found that maybe to use another instrument could be a good idea to get the full jazz feel to the music I am going to create. I may perhaps use a bass guitar, but i'm going to just focus on the Piano and trumpet for the time being and build it up if needed.

The music that I am after for the clip...

I am wanting it to be in F major and using dominant minor boogiewoogie bassline in the left hand.
F major scale
The f major scale has 1 flat.
Below is a picture of the F major scale notes on the piano and what it looks like and also the scale degrees.

The diagrams below show the scale notes, but without a key signature.

Boogiewoogie
Boogiewoogie is a style of piano which is based around blues, it's an African American style. It became popular in the late 1930's/early 1940's but originated a long time before this. It usually would have a regular bass figure which is in the left hand, and the bass figure that is being played in the left hand is transposed depending on what the chord changes are.
Boogiewoogie isn't just something that's used for a solo piano style, but it's also often used to accompany singers and also used in solo parts in bands and small combos. It's also known as 'eight to the bar', this is because it is mainly written in common time. (4/4)
This is what a typical Boogiewoogie bassline would look like.

The music for the clip will need to start slower than when it builds up, I wanted it to start slower because then I could it would be more obvious as to where the parts are meant to be filled with more tension, so accelerating throughout the piece but starting slower is something I'm after.
Sfzando notes which is when you have the instrument being played loud then immediately to quiet. I wanted to add these in because it adds suspense and tension.
Flicks in the right hand- this is a good way to add a jazz feel, so I'm wanting this to be included in the music.
I'm going to include upper octaves to add contrast.
I want there to be a diminuendo at the end to show that it's coming to an end, and it also fits really well with the clip.

Music throughout the whole clip?..

I am going to create a clip of music which will be around 2 minutes. So I can then cut up parts and move bits about which I want to be changed. I am thinking at the moment that I'd like the music to be throughout the entire clip, but where there are sound clips and parts where I want to be emphasised more I would just turn the volume of the music down slightly so these parts aren't drowned by the loudness of the music.

When the penguin flies in the air here:

I don't want the music to be too loud here I'd like here to be really exaggerated with sound effects to emphasis the penguin flying through the air.

When the scene get really tense and everything speeds up, for example when the dog starts laying down the tracks in order for the train to keep moving, and when the dog is climbing up the train to chase the penguin. I'm going to have the music much louder here to create tension and there isn't much speech going on here or sound affects and the real focus is on the dog so I'm going to make the music be louder.

My diary of making the music

Sophia and I went into a practice room and did a few practice runs of what I wanted the music to sound like. We tried it with the trumpet but it didn't sound right and I found that it sounded better with just piano.
I didn't want to add the trumpet because I felt as if there was too much going on if I used too many instruments and there is a lot going on in the piano recording so I thought it was fine.

We did a few takes and tried out different songs/improvisation so we could find something which fit perfectly.

*picture of Sophia playing piano*

I made the piano louder by putting a maximiser on it.

When I did my research I first thought that I didn't want the music to be going throughout the entire clip but when I put it all together it sounded right to have it playing through the whole thing. The only thing than needs to perhaps change is the loudness depending on the scene, so I am going to have a play around with the levels so I can hear what sounds the best. For example, when the scene gets more intense I'm going to increase the level of sound of the music to create a bigger and stronger atmosphere. Then throughout the less tense parts I will have the music slightly quieter.

Below is a link to the music which has been created for my clip.

If you go to 1.18 you can hear the contrast of where upper octaves are included just as I initially was wanting.

There isn't a score for the piece that we have created. I gave Sophia a solid idea of what I wanted and we had a play around with a few different things. It was more of an improvisation piece which was created and I advised Sophia and asked her to do things slightly different if I wanted a section done differently to how she first played it. I wanted to have a lot of contrast throughout, with the tempo changing a lot.
