LO1

Task 1 / LO1: The Components of a Moving Image Project

·         Complete an independent study of the relationship between sound and vision recording your findings in the form of a blog, including discussion of the components of sound for the moving image production and detailed analyses of around 10 existing and commercially available products.

Key concepts
  • Diegetic music (part of the action i.e characters aware of/interacting with it)
  • Extra or non diegetic music (titles, credits, underscore etc)
  • Composers/directors can achieve particularly dramatic effects by allowing a piece of music to mutate from one to another

Polyphonic - lots of sound
Homo-phonic - one noise

MUSIC FOR FILM & TV: TITLE ANALYSI

v  The Simpsons Theme Tune www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX1iplQQJTo

The instruments/sounds/SFX I can hear are:
-saxophone
-voice/singing (choir)
-guitar
-percussion
-sound effects e.g at the beginning when sawing the statue
-harp
-brass
-cars
-birds
Describe what the music sounds like:
  •  Changes throughout/starts off energetic then the atmosphere drops due to the change of scene
  •  Beginning is typical American/showbiz
  • Fast/has a change of pace throughout
  • A lot of change in instruments
Give 3 reasons why you think the music fits with the visual sequence?
  •  High energy at the beginning (Bart is a big character and comes across naughty, this reflect this well)
  •  When the scene changed to a more dull scene with a creepy atmosphere the choir singing adds to the feel of this alongside the finger picking of the guitar in the background, shows contrast
  • First scene more change in sound/instrument because a lot going on, whereas the second scene the movements they’re doing is continuous and repetitive, there is no change in the music sequence for this section. This has a dramatic effect and shows the movements they’re doing is routine.

v BluePlanet (Illuminescence)

The instruments/sounds/SFX I can hear are:
-speaking over the clip
-effects to set scene, build up/gets louder
-movement of water/bubbles

Describe what the music sounds like (including use of technology)
  •  Animated
  •  Creates the scene by building tension
  • Calm but changes when the mood does
  • Ambient sound
  • Alien like sound
  • Heavy sounds
  • Bass
  • Weird creatures-weird sounds
Give 3 reasons why you think the music reflects the characteristics of the sea creatures
  •   The more dangerous the animal the more intensive the music gets
  •  For the fish that flashes the music stopped and started also making you be able to relate to how the fish works and what noises it would make if it did make noises
  • Alien like noises, the music went in time to the fishes lighting on and off
  • Hunting squid the music sounded mischievous

v  The Thomas Crown Affair :Trailer

The instruments/sounds/SFX I can hear are:
-lasers
-drums
-alarms/alerts
-piano?

  •  Heavy
  • Effects
  • Fast and sudden halt to the music when someone says something that needs to stand out
  •  Relates to what is being said
  • Change throughout to what scene/fighting/love

What does the music suggest about the tone/characters in the film?

  •   Action and fighting
  • Spies/thriller

Clips of my own choice

What a wonderful world-David Attenborough- BBC ONE

Date- 7th December 2011
Genre- documentary
Director-
Composer- David speaks the song 'what a wonderful world'
Brief synopsis of setting- Wildlife
Time- 2 minutes
Place- Wildlife (all over the world)
Characters- David Attenborough (narrator and comes in the end of the clip) Animals- penguins, birds, insects, seals, jellyfish (sea creatures), owls, buffalo's, sea horses, elephants, frogs, lions, whales, hippos, turtles, monkeys, orrangutangs, and much more

This is opening shot to the clip. Having this as the opening shots shows us as the audience that it's about life and the world, straight away grabbing your attention by this image and letting us know what we are going to be watching but still letting our imagination wonder what it's going to be specifically about. It really sets the scene with this simple image and shows us that the images we will soon see are living in this earth. This shot is from 0 seconds to 3 which then changes to a close up of this animal.
Having this close up of an animal still leaves the audience wondering, not letting us know exactly what it is but we do know it's an animal. Showing the vibrant colour straight away is a way to grab the audience as well. This clip is a short shot which lasts just one second. During this clip you can start to hear noise, the waves which is shown in the next clip.
Then at 4 seconds footage of a wave comes at the screen (You can hear the waves crashing against the rock which is the same noise which was played in the clip before but now has gotten louder) and then footage of the sea underwater and the sound becomes more muffled just like sound does become when you're underwater. The beginning has been calm so this shows it's building up. So far there's been no actual music, just ambience and natural sounds showing the silence and natural sounds which are in the wildlife.

At 5 seconds to 6 seconds the camera pans over the snowy mountains with the sun coming up just through the mountains this shows the awakening of everything, still being the near beginning of the clip it's still introducing and setting the scene.

This image is at 7 seconds, a bright image of a puffin is shown, the puffin raises its head almost as if it's just woken up and it looks up above. There's a 'wooshy' sound as the puffin lifts its head up. This is creating sound which sounds like what the movement would sound like if it had sound.

This goes really well with the previous image, it's a view of a forest which is taken from underneath almost as if someone is looking up (like the puffin did) this blends in really well, like it's telling a story. There are sound of birds now, relating to where certain animals live, as we know birds live in trees so this shows this.

This shot is at 10 seconds. This is when David starts to speak the song 'What a wonderful world'. It pans over this as he says the words 'I see trees of green' almost as if he is looking at it himself, the worlds also relating to the visual side. At 11 seconds a bird is introduced. Still no music, just David narrating and the sound of the wildlife.
Flowers are then introduced. As he says 'I see them bloom' the music comes in as if the music is also blooming. (The music is played at 16 seconds) There are shots of flowers growing close up then a big shot of lots of flowers in a field. The music is quiet guitar, and over it at this point you can hear birds tweeting.

So far I've noticed all the colours are similar, being orange, yellows and red, more and more colours are appearing as the clip goes on.

At 19 seconds he says 'for me and for you' as he says 'for you' a clip of a little bug is shown, almost as if he is talking to this bug, involving everyone. Everything David says relates to what is being shown visually. So far everything that's been shown is mainly just land, and flowers, next the actual animals get introduced. Birds are shown.

At 24 seconds this animal is shown. As this animal is shown more instruments are brought in but quite quietly but gets louder throughout.

David says 'And I think to myself'..almost as if this animal is actually thinking. This is a really nice touch, it makes it seem really intimate and real and lets us as the audience be able to relate to what's going on. The animal is looking really relaxed and this reflects on the line that it said.
The music in the background really balances well with the speaking over it and the natural sounds of what is actually going on in the images. You can hear everything just the perfect amount.

At 36 seconds a close up image of an owl is shown who is looking straight into the camera, this is shown as the words 'I see' is said.
Following on from David saying 'I see'.. He says '..skies of blue' as this is said an image of a bird in the sky is shown. Everything that is said an image is related to it, this is a really lovely way to present a clip.

At 56 seconds 'What a wonderful world' is said. Whilst he says this a clip of thunder and lightening is shown. This contrasts with what has been said, even though thunder and lightening isn't always perceived as a nice thing, a negative thing has been shown in a positive aspect.

The music becomes a bit louder and stronger after the lightening/thunder has been shown. Then footage of the world is shown, sea horses swimming, underwater, jellyfish. Then comes in with a wide shot of elephants walking in front of a rainbow, again the words 'the colours of a rainbow' is said, relating to the pictures.

A slow motion image of a frog catching a fly is shown, after the sky has been spoken about. Showing this shot in slow motion really lets us look into detail about whats happening, and contrasts with the other images which have been fast and snappy before.

This show above of these walking through the water is shown at 1.12. There's a play on words as he says 'people going by'. Describing these as people and also the way they are walking does look very human like. Things being said like this make the clip add humor to it.
At 1.23 he says 'they're really saying' whilst the hippos have their mouths open.

So far there's been humor, and detailed images now he adds a bit of romance by showing an image of these two ducks and the words 'i love you' are said, almost as if they're a couple. After David says this, actual singing comes in the background saying 'i love you' very sweetly emphasizing this scene. From here on-wards there is harmonies in the background and the music has gotten stronger.

The words being said are from the song like I said before, but it 's very interesting how the words have been played on. It makes animals seem very human like. 'I hear babies crying' (an image of a small turtle is shown, then polar bears as babies).
'They'll learn much more' an image of monkeys using tools almost as if they're learning, relating back to describing these animals in the wild like humans. This happens at 1.36.

A lot of things are repeated throughout, for example when he says 'and I think to myself..' every time an image of an animal looking very relaxed and almost as if it's thinking. Happens again below.
At 1.49 the earth is shown again which rounds off the clip. Starting and ending the clip with a clip of the earth, and the camera panning around it closes it off nicely, showing that all the images been showing in between are living in this place, the earth.
Just after the image above is shown, David Attenborough comes onto the screen who is playing with the monkeys this is at 1.53. He says 'quite simply wonderful' and then laughs, this is a nice touch for the ending. To finish it off completely when the sign for BBC One comes up, the music is twinkling noises, this adds to the simplicity and the kind of things that is related to twinkling music is normally beautiful things like fairies, this automatically makes us think of nice and pretty things, hinting to us that the world we live in is a beautiful place to be.

During this piece they wouldn't have really needed foley artists because all the natural sounds that were used were natural with the clips that had been shot, so nothing would have needed to be recorded separately, other than obviously the music. The music through this clip enhances the scenes and I feel it makes it feel magical and beautiful, coming back to the real reason of the clip, showing us 'what a wonderful world' we live in; this is connected with the song that is used too.

Family Guy intro

Date- 1995
Genre- Adult animation/animated sitcom
Director- Creator of Family guy is Seth MacFarlane
Composer- Water Murphy composed the music and he also helped with writing the lyrics
Brief synopsis of setting
Time- 32 seconds
Place- America, it is based in a family home and their town, obviously created and made up
Characters- Peter and Lois (parents) Meg, Chris and Stewie (children) and Brian (pet dog)

LYRICS

Lois: It seems today,
That all you see,
Is violence in movies,
and sex on T.V.

Peter: But where are those good old fashion values....

All: On which we used to rely?!
Lucky theres a family guy!
Lucky theres a man who,
positively can do,
all the things that make us...

Stewie: laugh and cry!

All: He's a Fam-ily Guy!

The picture above is the opening shot to the clip. Having it just be a plain background with the name of the programme straight away gets the audience knowing what they're about to watch straight away. The music is then introduced.

Then straight away the music is brought in and there is a shot of the inside of the house and the first character is introduced which is Lois, the mother. This is at 4/5 seconds. Lois starts singing the song and at 10 seconds Peter then gets involved with the singing and the camera moves slightly to the left.

Above is a shot at 14 seconds which is when the rest of the characters are shown. The music breaks down as they slide into this formation and trumpets (I think) create a fast and sudden sound which gives the characters a strong entrance. They all sing together 'In which we used to rely' This is sang in harmony and almost accapella; this really enhances their entrance.

At 16 seconds it then goes onto a shot of all the family members in costumes and all the music gets slightly stronger and louder as more instruments are used. The music is quite funky and the types of instruments used are trumpets, piano, choir, drums, these are all very strong instruments and the music that is created really reflects well with the types of scenes that happen during the clip.

Throughout the clip there is a lot of stopping and starting moments which is so certain parts are enhanced. At 25 seconds Stewie sings '...Laugh and cry' which ends the sentence 'All the things that make us...' The music then comes back in straight away.

The characters then come back into the shot one by one in time to the music. This is at 27 seconds.
Whilst this is happening the words 'He's a family guy' are being sung. For example, when 'He's' is sung, a character comes onto the screen, 'A', another character comes onto the screen, and so on.

All the characters are shown and the camera angle goes up whilst they all sing 'guy' and Peter takes his hat off in time to the music. A lot of musicality is used throughout.

John Lewis Home Insurance Advert

Date- 2013
Genre- Advert
Director- Dougal Wilson
Composer- Fleetwood mac- don't stop is the original but Nina Nesbitt covers this song for the advert
Brief synopsis of setting
Time- 1.31 seconds
Place- England, in a house
Characters- Household items which are brought to life and given characters and a family

This is the first opening shot of the advert and the music begins straight away but is much more calmer in comparison to the music throughout the rest of the clip. The spoon comes out of the draw and looks around. Noises are created for the household items throughout which gives them characters and the noises which are used are familiar sounds to us.

The second shot which is at 3 seconds is when a book gets up as if it is alive and starts moving and gets off the side it is on.

At 5-6 seconds some jewellery comes out of a jewellery box and slithers out like a snake, it is given human/animal like actions. At this point the audience now knows that all these household items that are getting shown are all going somewhere, to the same place.

At 7 seconds the cutlery come out of the drawer and looks around, this gives the cutlery a character, they all do this at the same time. In order to do this they would have had to record natural sounds, in this case the sound of cutlery to make us audience recognise the noise made. People that record natural sounds are called foley artists.

At 8 seconds one of the spoons jumps out first as if it's leading the way then the rest follow. This is a nice moment for the audience to watch.

13 seconds the first character (human) is shown, she puts her cup down on the table and all the little tables underneath move out, the noises they've been given are almost the sound of footsteps.

18 seconds is when all the toys and other household items begin moving. At this point the music is getting more upbeat so everything is moving faster. When the teddy bears and the other toys start marching out the words 'If you wake up' are sung, almost as if the toys have just 'woken up'. The music gets louder but in the background there is still sound effects of the toys making noises, like little screams of excitement.

The wardrobe starts to move/walk and it does this in time to the music, and the sound effects from the wardrobe actually creates more music for the song, adding to the beat.

At 26 seconds all the shoes start walking in single file. In order to create these sounds foley artists would have had to go out and record these sounds. Again the sounds of the shoes fits into the song and is in time to the beat.

A lot of the time the words sung relate to what is happening in the scene, here for example, the words say 'Open your eyes, and look at the day', as the young boy opens the back door and the shoes go out. Also, the humans that are shown in this clip don't find what is going on bizarre and it is something that seems 'normal' to them, as they are not reacting to anything and go along with it.

At 38 seconds all of the household items are in the hallway with the little girl stood in the middle. The noise being created is louder than all the other times because they are all together and say there was a large group of people the noise level would grow, so they are treating this as if they are humans and real things.

The dad gets dragged out and he does seem slightly confused when everything around him starts moving and taking him away.

The household items all go outside and gather together. There is no singing at this point, it's just instrumental.

The music comes back in and the words say about times have come, these words are sung whilst a shot of some clocks are walking out in single file. It's really clever how they relate all of the words to the images that are being shown and it's something you only really notice when you take a close look.

The camera walks out very confidently and goes infront of all the household items who are ready to have a 'family picture' taken. Even though the sound effects are very quiet in the background if you listen closely you can hear them.

This shot below is a birds eye view of everything that is on the way out of the house. It shows a nice clear view of everything/everyone arranging themselves to have a family photo.

Then it goes into a shot of them facing the front and it gives us a head on view.

It then goes into a shot of the house again of the bathtub which is running late because it's the last household item to be coming out the house, aswell as the table that follows. Giving these household items human like characteristics almost makes us as the audience forget that we're watching household items and they're not real, you get lost in the advert and start to believe it for yourself, especially in this scenario because us as people are always late so giving these items a trait like this gives off the same look as a person.

At 1.11 seconds there goes a shot of what the camera can see then one second later shows it from the families view and what they can see and shows a shot of the front of the camera.

The music stops and the family is all ready to have their photo taken, and there's just a ticking sound, which could the sound of the clocks which were introduced earlier. This is as if they're waiting, because then they all turn to their left and the camera pans across the a shot of the son who has been dragged out of bed and is half asleep, this also makes the bit where the table and bath tub were 'late' look more realistic because it happened to the son too.

The son then looks around, again looking back at the household items that got up and looked around. Making the people and the items do the same actions makes it seem more believable, even though we know it's not real.

The camera then takes a picture when the boy isn't ready. The noise of the camera would have been recorded by a foley artist to ensure that it was the correct sound of a camera taking a picture. The flash of the light then causes the music to come straight back in with 'Don't stop thinking about tomorrow' as a shot of everything is shown again, this time as the photo that had just been taken.

#

It then has the camera zoom out and shows the shot below which is the photo of what has just been taken in a photo frame which is on the wall, representing a family portrait.

Ending it with a clear shot of the family photo and the last of the books jump back into their shelf for a finishing touch.

D-Box

Date- 2009
Genre- Advert
Director- Unknown
Composer- Unknown
Brief synopsis of setting- A dark room with just a red chair as the main focus in the middle of the room as that is the product which is getting spoken about
Time- 30 seconds
Place- America
Characters- A chair

This advert starts off with a camera panning across the words D-BOX, at this point you are unaware of what you are about to see and leaves you waiting and wondering what it's going to be about. Having the camera pan across the words gives you a slightly better idea of what it could be about. The words 'Life is all about choices' is said in a very deep and serious voice, it is a male which already shows dominance. The voice over straight away draws you in and makes you want to watch on.

A shot of a chair then comes onto the screen, at this point it's still quite dark so you could still be unaware of what the advert is about.

Whilst the camera is zooming out to give us a clearer view of the chair, it then says 'you can watch', which is very straight to the point, this is still keeping you intrigued. A spotlight then comes directly onto the chair giving you a much better view of the chair and you can see it much clearer. As soon as the spotlight comes on the music comes in which is a piano. Whilst this is happening the chair is getting shown in different angles, followed by the word '...or you can live'. The chair is then showed head on and the man speaking over starts to describe the chair and what it is that is trying to be sold. At this point we still don't know what it being sold.. is it the chair? Is it something else? The music stays just piano but the speed does get faster.

At 10 seconds the voice over man says 'the new way movies will move you'. As he says this the chair 'gets moved' just like he said, and the sound of wind appears which will have been recorded by a Foley artist. The wind gets stronger and causes the top of the chair to move as if the wind is pushing it.

It then changes quickly back to a side shot of the chair, giving it another angle for us to look at and the man speaking says 'Like never before'. Having short and sharp sentences enables us as the audience to be able to remember the phrases easily, allowing us to remember the advert vividly. After it comes out of the previous shot of the wind blowing it, more music kicks in, bringing in a beat.

After at 18 seconds the camera zooms in fast and comes to a close up of the material of the chair and the words 'feel the action...come to life' are spoken. Bringing the camera shot close up and saying the words 'feel the action..come to life' is almost making us tempted and to make us want to 'feel the action...come to life'. The chair then becomes water and waves so the words 'come to life' become relevant to the chair as it actually comes to life. The sound of natural waves would have been recorded and then put into the clip.

When the wave gets bigger and goes up the chair, this is the climax of the advert because the music gets stronger and more is going on.

it then fades out slowly to a shot of the top of the chair, showing us the brand of the chair again (d-box). In order to reach this shot the camera goes up the chair following the wave. The words 'D-Box motion code' is said, which is the name of what the advert is about.

The final shot is the one below and the voice over man says 'Live the action'. It still isn't very obvious as to what is being spoken about so I had to actually research it myself. Underneath on the YouTube video it says:
30 second theatrical spot for D-BOX. Moviegoers will feel as if they are living the action - experiencing every explosion, car chase and even flight scene right from their very own theater seat. This realistic, immersive experience is created with breakthrough D-BOX Motion Code™ technology in which the movie is coded, frame-by-frame, to create customized Motion Effects resulting in subtle, refined movements that work in perfect sync with the action taking place onscreen.

I think that the advert is leaving the audience wondering what this is about so we therefore go and research it to find out, then bringing in more customers and getting more recognition. Having such a powerful advert with strong words/phrases, over the top music and sharp shots really draws the audience in which will definitely make you want to look more into it. It is a clever way of selling a product, as it is very discreet and subconsciously makes us wants to buy it.

5.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ii7BAQthiVw

Date- 2010
Genre- Dance film
Director- Jon M. Chu
Composer- Bear McCreary
Brief synopsis of setting- Dance film which is set on the streets
Time- 30 seconds clip
Place- America/ dance studios/ dance school
Characters- Dancers, within this clip the main characters that are shown are Adam Sevani, Sharni Vison, Alyson Stoner and more

The opening shot of the clip is a shot from the actual film itself of the two main characters having a conversation This simple shot straight away shows us as the audience who the two main characters are and who the main focus is on.

At 5 seconds the shot of the stereos below are shown as if it is getting looked at through a camera. The music straight away comes in strongly at this point and you can tell instantly that the film is going to be upbeat. It's also quite easy to tell that it's going to be about music due to the music coming in so heavily and the pictures of the boom box's being shown. This shot is taken through a camera almost like a home video so the stability of the shot is quite shaky, this gives a nice touch.

At 6 seconds a shot of a dance crew is shown instantly and it is a birds eye view. One of the dancers jumps up at the screen. It is also a very good formation that they are in and this instantly grabs our eye. The music comes in much stronger as the dancer jumps into the screen.

Straight away after another shot of another dance crew is shown. It's a good clear shot allowing us to see everything that is going on. I think at this point it becomes very obvious that it is a dance film. After this is just shows a few shots of the film, shots that will make the audience want to watch the film and the ones that are the most intriguing and the ones that look more interesting.

Below is an example of a good shot that happens during the film which could encourage you to watch it.

At 11 seconds a shot of the actual film is shown, the music is made slightly quieter to enable us to hear the speaking. The main actor in the film says 'meet my new crew'.

Home videos were then shown of the crew that he was speaking about. This is a good way of introducing the characters. It adds a good feel to the clip as the film is about street dance and being on the streets, taking it back to your routes, being at home, so having a home video creates this feel.

At 17 seconds more shots of dance crews come in and it changes from having shots of the dancing and shots of the actual film. The music throughout changes level of sound to allow any speech to be heard. The rest of the clip continues having clips and small shots of dance routines and as expected it shows the most interesting looking dances.

Below is a shot of a good dance routine where the dance members are dressed in lights, this brings the audience in. The camera doesn't do much panning because it shows quick and snappy shots instead of having slow parts, everything is the main focus.
